The fine for driving without a vignette in Bulgaria — how much and how to avoid it
Driving a Bulgarian motorway without a valid vignette risks a fine that can reach you weeks after the trip — including at your home address. Enforcement in Bulgaria is fully electronic and backed by patrols, so "slipping through" a short section is practically out of the question. We explain how much the penalty is, how detection works and how to remove the risk in two minutes.
How much the fine is
For a passenger car the fine for driving without a valid vignette is roughly about €150 (around 300 leva). That is a multiple of the price of even the longest vignette, so saving on the charge never pays off. The level of the penalty is updated by the Bulgarian authorities from time to time — the figure given is the order of magnitude to expect.
By comparison, the cheapest vignette (daily or weekend) costs a fraction of that amount, and even the yearly vignette is far cheaper than a single fine. Economically, driving without a vignette makes no sense.
How a missing vignette is detected
Bulgaria bases enforcement on two pillars:
- ANPR cameras — fixed and mobile plate readers placed along the motorways. They work automatically, 24 hours a day, and compare the plate against the database of valid vignettes.
- Road patrols — on-route checks that complement the camera system.
Importantly, the penalty notice can arrive with a delay — even a few weeks after the trip. Thanks to data exchange it also reaches foreign drivers, at the address in the country where the vehicle is registered. So the absence of a fine "on the spot" does not mean the trip was safe — the penalty may catch up with you after you get home.
Watch the category and validity
It is not only completely skipping the vignette that is penalised, but also driving after it expires. If your vignette runs out during a longer stay and you keep using tolled roads, you risk a fine. Remember too that when towing, the trailer needs its own vignette — a missing second vignette is also grounds for a penalty. More on this in the post about the trailer vignette.
What to do if you get a notice
If a penalty notice reaches you after the trip, do not ignore it — unpaid fines can grow and complicate your next entry into the country. Keep the vignette purchase confirmation if you had one: sometimes the case concerns a typo in the registration number or a wrong start date. If in doubt, it is worth contacting us with your order number — we will check whether the vignette was registered correctly.
How to avoid the fine
The way is simple: buy the vignette before you enter a tolled road. Buying online takes about two minutes, and you can activate the vignette at once or set the start date to your departure day. After payment we register it in the bgtoll.bg system, usually within 10–15 minutes, and bind it to the registration number.
If you are only planning a short trip, check the weekend vignette — it can be cheaper than the 7-day one. You will find the full price list here.
