Heading to the Bulgarian Black Sea coast or transiting to Turkey or Greece? Bulgarian motorways (Trakia, Hemus, Struma, Maritsa) and first-class national roads require an electronic vignette (e-vinetka). Buy it online here — no queues at the border. Without a valid vignette you face a fine of around €150 (approx. 300 BGN) — enforcement is by ANPR cameras and patrols.

What you need to know

The Bulgaria vignette in 3 sentences

Bulgaria has had an electronic vignette (e-vinetka) since 2019 — nothing goes on the windscreen, it is digital and linked to your number plate. As soon as you enter a Bulgarian motorway or a first-class national road, ANPR cameras check whether you have one.

Who does it apply to? Every vehicle up to 3.5 t — car, van, motorhome. Motorcycles are exempt. If you tow a trailer, you add a separate vignette for the trailer.

When do you need it? Whenever you use a motorway (Trakia A1, Hemus A2, Struma A3, Maritsa A4, Lyulin A6) or a first-class national road. Second- and third-class roads and city streets are free.

What do you do? Pick a category and period, enter your number plate, pay. 2026 prices — weekend, 7 days, month, quarter and year. Bulgaria is one of the few countries with a weekend vignette.

The weekend vignette — a Bulgarian speciality

Bulgaria is one of the few countries in Europe with a weekend vignette: valid from Friday 12:00 to Sunday 23:59. Perfect for a quick hop to the Black Sea or the mountains. For weekdays, take at least the 7-day one (18,50 €).

The annual vignette = 365 days from purchase

The Bulgarian annual vignette is valid for exactly 365 days from the start date — NOT until the end of the calendar year. Buy in July, drive until next July. Simple, with no cut-off-date traps.

Motorcycle free, trailer chargeable

In Bulgaria motorcycles are exempt — you do not need a vignette. But a trailer towed behind a car has its OWN, chargeable category. That is the opposite of many neighbouring countries — check before you set off towing.

Where it applies

Bulgarian motorways covered by the vignette

The vignette applies on ALL Bulgarian motorways (автомагистрали) and on first-class national roads. Practically every longer route — to the Black Sea, to Turkey or Greece — runs through a tolled section.

  • A1 Trakia — Sofia → Plovdiv → Burgas (~360 km): The country’s main axis from the west to the Black Sea. The key holiday route (Burgas, Sunny Beach) and transit corridor across central Bulgaria.
  • A2 Hemus — Sofia → Varna (~360 km): The northern axis to the second Black Sea resort (Varna, Golden Sands). It runs via Botevgrad, Lovech and Shumen; further sections opened in 2025.
  • A3 Struma — Sofia → Kulata (Greek border): The south-western corridor towards Thessaloniki and the Greek coast. The main entry point on the transit route to Greece.
  • A4 Maritsa — Plovdiv → Kapitan Andreevo (Turkish border): The key gateway to Turkey (~115 km). It connects to the Turkish TEM corridor towards Istanbul. The most common Turkey transit route.
  • A6 Lyulin — Sofia → Daskalovo (~19 km): A short motorway linking Sofia’s western ring with the Struma (A3) towards Greece and North Macedonia.

Where you do NOT need a vignette

  • Second- and third-class roads and local roads — free, but slower
  • Streets and bypasses within cities (Sofia, Plovdiv, Varna, Burgas)
  • The Danube Bridge Ruse–Giurgiu (from Romania) — that is a SEPARATE bridge toll, not the vignette

  • The most common entry to the Black Sea runs via Hungary and Romania and the Ruse–Giurgiu Danube bridge — a separate bridge toll, outside the vignette.
  • Driving via Hungary — buy a Hungarian vignette on our sister site e-matrica.org; via Romania — on e-rovinieta.org.
  • Bulgaria is the gateway to Turkey (A4 Maritsa → Kapitan Andreevo) and Greece (A3 Struma → Kulata). On both routes the Bulgarian vignette applies right up to the border.
  • The vignette activates from a date you choose — even in advance. At bgtoll.bg you can buy it up to one month ahead.

What to expect

  • Euro (EUR) since 2026 — Bulgaria adopted the euro on 1 January 2026, so no currency exchange (the old lev is being withdrawn).
  • Cards widely accepted — in cities and resorts cards work everywhere; in smaller towns it is worth carrying some cash.
  • Cyrillic alphabet — road signs are often bilingual (Cyrillic + Latin), but not always. A sat-nav helps.
  • The Black Sea — season from June to September; Sunny Beach and Golden Sands are the main resorts.
  • Tol Pass for heavy vehicles — vehicles over 3.5 t pay separately per kilometre (not the vignette).
  • Safe — the tourist regions are safe and family-friendly.
Who it applies to

Who needs a vignette and in which category

In Bulgaria the vignette covers vehicles up to 3.5 t. There is a single rate for car, van and motorhome. Motorcycles are exempt. Vehicles over 3.5 t do not buy a vignette — they fall under the separate Tol Pass system (a per-kilometre charge).

Vignette required:

  • Car / van / motorhome — any vehicle up to 3.5 t with at least four wheels (single rate)
  • Trailer — towed behind the vehicle, it has a separate, chargeable vignette (same rate as the vehicle)
  • Van, MPV, SUV up to 3.5 t — the same category as a passenger car

Exempt / not this system:

  • Motorcycle and moped — exempt, no vignette needed
  • Vehicle over 3.5 t — falls under the Tol Pass charge (per kilometre), not the vignette
  • Coach over 3.5 t — also Tol Pass, does not buy a vignette
  • Priority and service vehicles: ambulance, police, military — as per regulations

Trailer and caravan

In Bulgaria a trailer has its own vignette — when towing a trailer or caravan you need TWO vignettes: one for the towing vehicle and one for the trailer. That is an important difference from, e.g., Slovenia, where trailers are exempt. The trailer rate is the same as the vehicle rate.

How to buy a vignette with us

Three steps:

  1. Choose category and period — vehicle up to 3.5 t (and optionally a trailer); weekend, 7 days, month, quarter or year.
  2. Enter the number plate — exactly as on the plate. No spaces.
  3. Pay — card, Google/Apple Pay. Confirmation by email once the payment is processed.
Fine

What you risk without a vignette

In Bulgaria enforcement is electronic — ANPR cameras scan plates 24/7, plus patrols. No valid vignette is treated as driving without payment and carries a fine. The fine can arrive weeks later, including to your home country.

Fines for driving without a vignette
TypeAmountEURNotes
Fine for no vignette (car ≤3.5 t)approx. €150 (≈300 BGN)—Base amount for a passenger car
On-the-spot paymentapprox. €150—Often expected immediately from foreign drivers
Heavier vehicle / repeat offencehigher—Amounts rise with vehicle weight and repeat offences
  • Automatic enforcement — ANPR cameras on gantries and patrols scan plates in real time.
  • Fine can come later — it may arrive weeks afterwards, including to an address in another EU country.
  • First-class roads are tolled too — the vignette applies not only on motorways but also on national first-class roads.
  • Motorcycle without a vignette — motorcycles are exempt, so this does not affect them.
  • Check online — you can verify the vignette validity at bgtoll.bg by number plate.

The numbers speak for themselves

A 7-day vignette costs 18,50 €, and the weekend one even less. A fine for having none is around €150 (≈300 BGN) — many times more. There is no point in risking it.

Rules

What you need to know about driving in Bulgaria

Bulgarian motorways keep improving, but national roads can be uneven. The rules are strict. The essentials:

The key differences from home

  • Motorway up to 140 km/h — one of the highest limits in the EU. Expressway 120, outside built-up areas 90, in town 50.
  • Alcohol 0.5 ‰ — but 0.0 ‰ for drivers with less than 2 years’ experience. Checks are frequent.
  • Winter tyres — required in winter conditions (typically 15 November – 1 March), min. 4 mm tread. Studded tyres are banned.
  • Lights — dipped headlights mandatory in winter (1 November – 1 March) and always in poor visibility and tunnels.
  • Phone hands-free only — the fine for a phone in hand can be higher than for speeding.
  • Child seats — a child under 150 cm and 12 years only in a suitable seat.
  • Compulsory equipment — warning triangle, reflective vest, first-aid kit and fire extinguisher.

Emergency numbers

  • 112 — the universal emergency number (ambulance, fire, police)
  • 166 — police
  • 146 — roadside assistance (SBA, Union of Bulgarian Motorists)
  • 116 116 — blocking payment cards

FAQ

Frequently asked questions about the Bulgaria vignette

How much does a Bulgaria vignette cost in 2026?

Bulgarian vignettes for 2026 (vehicle up to 3.5 t): weekend 14,95 €, 7 days 18,50 €, 30 days 28,50 €, quarter 44,95 €, year 78,95 €. Prices are in euro (EUR) — Bulgaria adopted the euro in 2026.

Do I need a vignette if I am only transiting to Turkey or Greece?

Yes. Any use of a Bulgarian motorway or first-class road requires a vignette — even a short transit to Turkey (A4 Maritsa) or Greece (A3 Struma). ANPR cameras work from the first kilometre.

What is the weekend vignette?

It is a Bulgarian speciality — a vignette valid from Friday 12:00 to Sunday 23:59, cheaper than the 7-day one (18,50 €). Ideal for a short trip to the Black Sea or the mountains. If you also drive on weekdays, take at least the 7-day one.

Does a motorcycle need a vignette in Bulgaria?

No. In Bulgaria motorcycles and mopeds are exempt from the vignette — you do not need to buy anything.

Does a trailer need a separate vignette?

Yes. In Bulgaria a trailer towed behind the vehicle has its OWN, chargeable vignette — you need two: one for the vehicle and one for the trailer. That is the opposite of Slovenia, where trailers are exempt.

When does the vignette activate after purchase?

You can choose a start date — at bgtoll.bg up to one month ahead. If you choose today, activation in the official system usually takes 10-15 minutes after the payment is processed.

How long is the annual vignette valid?

The Bulgarian annual one is valid for exactly 365 days from the start date — NOT until the end of the calendar year. Buy in July, drive until next July.

How are the validity periods counted?

Weekend: Friday 12:00 – Sunday 23:59. 7 days: the start day and 6 more. 30 days: the start day and 29 more. Quarter: until the day before the same date 3 months later. Year: 365 days from the start. Always until 23:59 on the last day.

What if I enter the wrong number plate?

That is a serious problem — the vignette would be linked to a non-existent car. Always check the plate before confirming. After activation no change is possible; you must buy a new one.

On which roads does the vignette apply?

On all motorways (Trakia A1, Hemus A2, Struma A3, Maritsa A4, Lyulin A6) and on first-class national roads. Second- and third-class roads and city streets are free.

Does a vehicle over 3.5 t buy a vignette?

No. Vehicles over 3.5 t (lorries, coaches) fall under the Tol Pass system — a per-kilometre charge calculated by GPS. We offer vignettes for vehicles up to 3.5 t, not Tol Pass charges.

How much is the fine for no vignette?

For a passenger car the fine is around €150 (approx. 300 BGN). Enforcement is automatic (ANPR cameras and patrols) and the notice may reach you in your home country too. The vignette is many times cheaper — not worth the risk.

Can I refund a vignette I did not use?

Yes, but only BEFORE activation. If you bought with a future date and your plans changed, write to us — we will handle it, provided the vignette has not started. After activation no refund is possible.

How do I check whether my vignette is active?

Go to bgtoll.bg and enter the number plate — the system shows active vignettes and their validity periods. Free of charge.

I am continuing through Romania / Hungary — what about the vignette?

The Bulgarian vignette works only in Bulgaria. For Romania you need a separate rovinieta (e-rovinieta.org), for Hungary a Hungarian e-matrica (e-matrica.org). Links to our sister sites are also at the bottom of this page.
