Frequently asked questions
Everything worth knowing about the Bulgarian vignette — before you set off.
Basics
What is the vignette and when do I need it?
The vignette (Bulgarian e-vinetka) is the fee for using Bulgarian motorways (A1 Trakia, A2 Hemus, A3 Struma, A4 Maritsa, A6 Lyulin) and national first-class roads. It is mandatory for vehicles up to 3.5 t. Since 2019 it is fully electronic — nothing is stuck on, ANPR cameras scan plates 24/7. Without a valid vignette you risk a fine of about €150 (approx. 300 BGN).
Is the vignette a sticker for the windscreen?
No. The Bulgarian vignette is fully electronic. Nothing is stuck on — the system links the fee to the registration number and checks it automatically via ANPR cameras and patrols.
What period can I buy the vignette for?
Options: weekend (Fri 12:00 – Sun 23:59), 7 days, 30 days, quarter and year (365 days from the start date). Bulgaria is one of the few countries with a weekend vignette — handy for a short trip to the Black Sea or the mountains.
Can I set the start date in the future?
Yes. At purchase you choose the start date — today or up to a month ahead. Useful when you plan a trip in advance.
Purchase & payment
How do I buy the vignette step by step?
You choose the category (vehicle up to 3.5 t, optionally a trailer) and period, enter the plate, start date and email, and pay. It takes about two minutes, no account needed. You get confirmation by email.
Which payment methods do you accept?
Card (Visa, Mastercard), Apple Pay and Google Pay. Payments are handled by an external provider used by major online shops.
What currency do I pay in?
The vignette price is set in euros (EUR) — Bulgaria adopted the euro in 2026. The final amount is shown at payment.
Is your price the same as in the official system?
Our price may be higher than the official system because we are an intermediary service — the price includes the road toll plus our service (registration on your behalf, handling, support). You can always buy the vignette directly on bgtoll.bg.
How quickly does the vignette become active?
After payment we register the vignette in the official bgtoll.bg system — usually 10-15 minutes after the payment is processed. You receive confirmation by email. With a future start date it applies from that date.
Bulgaria
How much does a Bulgaria vignette cost?
The cheapest is the weekend vignette, then the 7-day one. Available periods: weekend, 7 days, 30 days, quarter and year. One rate covers car, van and camper up to 3.5 t (no split by height). You will find the exact amounts in the price list.
Which Bulgarian roads require a vignette?
The vignette applies on motorways (A1 Trakia Sofia–Plovdiv–Burgas, A2 Hemus Sofia–Varna, A3 Struma towards Greece, A4 Maritsa towards Turkey, A6 Lyulin) and on national first-class roads. Second- and third-class roads and city streets are free. The Ruse–Giurgiu bridge (from Romania) is a separate bridge toll.
What is the fine for no vignette in Bulgaria?
Enforcement is electronic (ANPR cameras) plus patrols. The fine is about €150 (approx. 300 BGN) for a passenger car. The notice can arrive weeks later, including in your home country.
Does the Bulgarian vignette work in other countries?
No. The Bulgarian vignette applies only on Bulgarian roads. Driving through Hungary? Buy the Hungarian vignette on e-matrica.org; through Romania — on e-rovinieta.org; Slovakia — on e-znamka.org; Czechia — on e-dalnice.org; Slovenia — on e-vinjeta.org.
Vehicles & categories
Does a motorcycle need a vignette in Bulgaria?
No. In Bulgaria motorcycles are exempt from the vignette — you buy nothing. This differs from, e.g., Slovenia, where the motorcycle is paid.
Does a trailer need its own vignette in Bulgaria?
In Bulgaria the trailer has its OWN, paid vignette. Towing a trailer or caravan you need two vignettes: for the vehicle and for the trailer. The opposite of, e.g., Slovenia, where trailers are exempt. The trailer rate equals the vehicle rate.
Which vehicles do you serve?
Vehicles up to 3.5 t GVW — car, van, camper (one rate) and trailer (separate, paid). Vehicles over 3.5 t do not buy a vignette — they fall under the separate Tol Pass system (per-kilometre charge).
Does a camper need a vignette in Bulgaria?
A camper up to 3.5 t is the same category as a car — one rate (VEHICLE). Heavier campers (over 3.5 t) settle via the Tol Pass system (per-kilometre charge), not the vignette.
After purchase
What if I entered the wrong plate?
Write to us as soon as possible at info@bg-vineta.org with the order number and the correct plate. If the vignette is not yet activated, we will try to correct the data. After activation a change may be impossible — so check the data before payment.
Can I get a refund?
If you bought with a future start date and the vignette has not started, write to us — we will arrange the refund. After activation the vignette is a delivered digital service and is not refundable.
I did not get a confirmation email — what should I do?
Check spam and promotions. If the email is missing after about 15 minutes, write to info@bg-vineta.org with the plate and the email used at purchase — we will check the status.
Are you an official government website?
No. We are an independent, commercial intermediary service registering vignettes on behalf of the buyer. We are not affiliated with any authority or toll operator. The official system is bgtoll.bg — you can also buy the vignette there yourself.
Routes & transit
I am going to the Black Sea — do I need the Bulgarian vignette?
Yes. Routes to the Bulgarian coast (Varna, Burgas, Sunny Beach, Golden Sands) run via the A1 Trakia and A2 Hemus motorways. You need the Bulgarian vignette. Remember vignettes in the transit countries too.
From the UK/EU to Bulgaria — which vignette?
You usually drive via Hungary and Romania (Ruse–Giurgiu bridge) or via Serbia. You need the Bulgarian vignette plus those of transit countries — Hungarian (e-matrica.org) and possibly Romanian (e-rovinieta.org). The Ruse bridge is a separate toll.
I am transiting to Turkey or Greece — what about the vignette?
On Bulgarian motorways you need the Bulgarian vignette regardless of distance. To Turkey via A4 Maritsa → Kapitan Andreevo, to Greece via A3 Struma → Kulata. The vignette applies right up to the border.
I only drive a short motorway stretch — do I need a vignette?
Yes. The vignette applies across the whole motorway and first-class road network, whether one kilometre or 300 km. ANPR cameras work from the first kilometre.
Does the Bulgarian vignette work in Romania or Serbia?
No. Each country has its own system. For Romania buy the rovinieta on e-rovinieta.org, for Hungary on e-matrica.org, for Slovakia on e-znamka.org, for Czechia on e-dalnice.org, for Slovenia on e-vinjeta.org. Serbia uses per-section tolls (no vignette).
Where is it best to buy the vignette before departure?
Online, in advance — before you set off. That way the vignette is ready before you reach the border. You can set the start date to your departure day.
Company car, leasing, rental
My car is leased — can I buy a vignette?
Yes. The vignette is linked to the registration number, not the owner. Whether owned, leased or financed — you enter the plate and you are done.
I drive a company car — whose name is the vignette in?
The vignette is tied to the vehicle plate, not the driver or company. You enter the company car plate and it works just like a private one.
I rented a car — who buys the vignette?
Check the contract — some rental companies add the vignette, some do not. If not, you buy it yourself with the rental car plate. The vignette is valid regardless of who owns the car.
I changed the plates — what about the vignette?
The vignette is tied to a specific plate. After a change the old vignette stops being valid. If you are only planning this, buy on the current plate or wait for the new one.
I am selling a car with a valid vignette — does it pass to the buyer?
The vignette stays linked to the plate. If the new owner keeps the same plates, it keeps working. With a plate change — it expires for the old number.
Practical situations
I bought at night — will it work right away?
Yes. Orders are processed automatically, at any hour. After payment we register the vignette in the official system usually within 10-15 minutes, regardless of the time. Confirmation comes by email.
How do I check whether my vignette is active?
After purchase you get a confirmation email with details (plate, period). You can also verify the status in the official bgtoll.bg system by plate.
Will I get an invoice for the vignette?
We operate as a non-VAT company, so we do not issue VAT invoices. You receive an electronic purchase confirmation by email with the amount and order details — it serves as proof of purchase.
Is the vignette checked at the border?
Bulgaria has been in the land Schengen area since 2025 — no fixed checks at the borders with Romania and Greece. The vignette is checked by ANPR cameras along the motorways — automatically, 24 hours a day.
What if the vignette expires during my trip?
After expiry, continuing on tolled roads risks a fine. If you return after a longer stay, buy a new vignette with a start date on your return day — you can do it online from anywhere.
How long is the annual vignette valid?
The Bulgarian annual vignette lasts exactly 365 days from the start date — NOT until the end of the calendar year. Bought in July, drive until next July. Simple, no end-date traps.
